When Winter Won’t Let Go (And My Chickens Are Coming Anyway)

Starting to stress about winter not wanting to leave

Spring is technically around the corner… at least according to the calendar. Here in Quebec, however, winter seems to have other plans.

My chickens are scheduled to arrive from a local farm on April 9th, and unlike the weather, that date isn’t going to change. The good news is that the chicken coop itself is already built and ready to welcome its new residents. The not-so-good news? Getting to it right now feels like a bit of an expedition.

During the winter, I had what I thought was a brilliant idea. To protect my outdoor furniture from the snow, I moved everything into the chicken run. Chairs, small tables, a few things that needed shelter… it all went in there. At the time, it felt like the perfect solution.

Fast-forward to early spring.

There is still a lot of snow on the ground, the run is full of patio furniture, and I’m standing here wondering two things:
How am I supposed to get to the coop… and where on earth am I going to put everything that’s currently sitting inside the run?

What seemed like smart winter planning has turned into a bit of a spring puzzle. I’ll need to clear a path through the snow, empty the run, and get everything ready before the chicks arrive. Easy in theory. Slightly more complicated when winter refuses to pack up and leave.

For now, I’m watching the weather, waiting for a bit of melting, and hoping I won’t be shoveling a path for chickens in April.

One thing is certain though — when those little girls arrive, they’ll definitely have a story to start their new home with. 🐔
